Riley Snorton has done an incredible job of pulling together a wide range of theories to curate his discussion of race and gender, and moreover, he explains those theories well.Īs you may have already guessed, “Black on Both Sides” is not your run of the mill history book. Regardless, I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in gender studies, even if you haven’t delved into much theory yet. C. Now I will say, this may be a somewhat challenging read for those who don’t have a background in academic theory, but I think it’s doable if you’re willing to stop and google things, which I still had to do myself despite my academic background. Thankfully, “Black on Both Sides” has a deliciously robust bibliography which I have marked up for future reading. The second was that I need to broaden the academic theory I read. The first thing I learned reading this was that I’m very out of practice when it comes to reading academic theory.

The most important takeaway from The Smartest Guys in the Room is to understand the key enabling conditions for Enron’s deception. They only stopped when it became untenable. Shareholders, employees, investment bankers, and accountants all benefited from the situation and enabled Enron for years. You might be surprised to learn that most of Enron’s accounting tactics were not technically illegal at the time - they were actually publicly celebrated for being financial innovations. In reality, when you dig into the details, Enron’s downfall is the predictable mixture of human greed, poorly structured incentives, and lack of sanity checks when everyone has their fingers in the pie. Surely we’ve evolved as a society, and by thinking hard enough, you or I can avoid these problems. Today the name “Enron” still evokes a reflexive repulsion, a feeling that these were simply bad people doing illegal things. Shareholders were wiped out, and tens of thousands of employees left with worthless retirement accounts. Its accounting scandal led to Enron’s bankruptcy as well as the dissolution of Arthur Andersen, one of the big five accounting firms. The failure of Enron in the early 2000’s is one of the largest bankruptcies in US history (with Lehman Brothers in 2008 as the largest). 1-Page Summary 1-Page Book Summary of The Smartest Guys in the Room Variations filled more paper as the proportions of different parts changed, pieces were added and subtracted, and hull contours, both gently curved and angular, were explored in perspective. Later on, it was decided that Voyager would be able to land on a planetary surface, requiring deployable landing gear and other arrangements of resting-on-hull components to be sketched out. Sternbach's early sketches had Voyager as a streamlined, dart-like primary hull, with a flattened, elongated engineering hull, sporting swept-back runabout-like warp pylons. Star Trek producers had already begun to plan for a new series set on a smaller starship than the Enterprise-D, but instead of waiting for more clarification, Rick Sternbach immediately started making sketches of this unnamed vessel. The earliest concepts for Star Trek: Voyager came in September 1993, during the last season of Star Trek: The Next Generation and the second season of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. 4.1 Derivative ship class studio modelsĬoncept art for the opening credits of Star Trek: Voyager. It is this photograph that causes Polly to start remembering how she received that photograph, among with other things she shouldn't remember, things that have been buried in her memory for years now. As she is packing for a second year of college, nineteen-year-old Polly notices a photograph of burning bales of hay, entitled "Fire and Hemlock," in her room at her grandmother's house. The plot, however, is pretty simple and while reading it I tended to forget that Polly was reliving "forgotten" memories. How did this happen to Polly? What will she do about it, now that she knows that for the past four/five years she and everyone around her has erased the true past and gone on believing a lie? It's a really interesting premise, and I expected Jones to go more in depth with philosophical and big questions. Based on the synopsis provided, I expected a story that really focused on the mystery surrounding Polly's memories. The main issue I had with this story is how misleading the promotional blurb is. Unfortunately, Fire and Hemlock did not prove to be an enjoyable fantasy or an enjoyable "Tam Lin" retelling for me. Thus, when I saw that she wrote a retelling of "Tam Lin," I was happy to finally have the chance to read one of her novels. Although I consider myself a huge YA fantasy fan, I've never read anything by Diana Wynne Jones before. Don't I know it? Of course I see that it is foolish for me to live so long, but wait! The tapping of the WATCHMAN'S rattle is heard in the garden. I usually think that Tessa Dare does a brilliant job with plotting, but this one dragged with a plot that felt half-hearted. The whole conflict with Rafe trying to convince Clio to marry his brother though NO ONE wanted that scenario was very weak. First of all, the plot really made no sense. I'm utterly devastated because I loved the first in the series, but this was such a let down. I probably should have given less than 2 stars because I paid a lot of money for the ebook + audiobook and I could barely finish it.
